Saturday’s Cavalcade Cup opener at the Weedsport Speedway saw Larry Wight win the 25-lap Empire Super Sprint main event. After receiving a trophy and $2,000 for the victory, the Phoenix driver hustled back to the pit area and jumped into his Gypsum Express big-block modified and went out and won the sixty-lap main event for modifieds.

The $7,500 modified triumph was his 12th of the year and completed a $9,500 evening for Wight. The crash-filled ESS sprint event saw “Lightning Larry” take the top spot on the seventh lap on the three-eighth-mile Weedsport oval and he held the top spot until the checkered flag.

Tyler Cartier led the first lap, but six laps later caught a wheel and went into a series of violent flips into the first turn wall. Fortunately, the young Mexico driver scrambled out of his heavily damaged sprinter without injury. Danny Varin and Shawn Donath were also flip victims, but again no injuries were reported.

At the finish, it was Wright, ESS point leader Jordan Poirier, Paul Colagiovanni, Dave Franek and Joe Trenca making up the top five finishers.

MODIFIEDS: The 60-lap feature for DIRTcar big-block modifieds saw Zach Paine move out into the early lead, but Wight took over first on lap seven. Race favorites Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen were back in the field, after Sheppard redrew the 12th starting position and Friesen needed to run the consolation race to get into the feature.

Wight had built a sizable lead in the early laps, but brushed the inner hub rail on lap 30 and his left front tire started leaking air. With most of the leaders running the low groove, Sheppard mounted a charge to the front using the top groove of the track.

Sheppard passed a dozen cars in the closing laps and was on the leader’s back bumper on the final lap. But Wight, struggling with a flat LF tire, managed to just outlast Sheppard for the win. It was his 12th win of the 2022 season.

“I think I had the fastest car here tonight,” said Sheppard after the race. “But starting 12th and having only one caution period during the sixty laps really hurt me. I just needed a couple more laps.”

Paine ended up third, with Chris Hile, Rocky Warner, Jimmy Phelps, Dave Marcuccilli, Billy Decker, Mike Mahaney and Tim Sears Jr. completing the top ten finishers.

TRACK RECORD: Justin Haers set a new Weedsport modified track record in the pre-race time trials with a 15.145 second run.

PRO STOCKS: Nick Stone scored a dominating victory in the 30-lap pro stock main event.

WEEDSPORT RAIN: Sunday’s Cavalcade Cup program was rained out. The 75-lap DIRT sportsman special will be run on October 4 during Weedsport’s Super DIRT Week show.

LANCASTER: Sunday’s U.S Open special for Race of Champions asphalt modifieds was rained out and will not be rescheduled. Saturday’s preliminary show did get in with George Skora just holding off Andy Jankowiak for the RoC sportsman win. Eric Brown was the street stock victor and Jonathan Reed was first in the T-Q finale.

BROOKFIELD: Promoter Brett Deyo and track prep specialist Jamie Friesen combined to prepare the Brookfield Speedway on the Madison County Fairgrounds for a great night of grassroots racing Saturday.

Derrick McGrew picked up $1,000 for winning the crate sportsman feature, while Brett Belden took the pro stock/street stock main event.

CAN-AM: Tim Fuller won his ninth feature of the year in the 358 mod finale, with Billy Dunn, Ronnie Davis III, Rocky Warner and Tyler Caprara following.

ALBANY-SARATOGA: Matt DeLorenzo won his tenth main event of the year, with Jack Speshock and Marc Johnson second and third.

RANSOMVILLE: Canadian Mat Williamson won his 26th feature of the year Friday. Chad Brachman and Ryan Susice followed.

LAND OF LEGENDS: The Rush Late Model Tour was the main attraction Saturday and Logan Roberson got the $3,000 first place prize.

LEBANON VALLEY: With the DIRT big-blocks at Weedsport, Lebanon Valley ran a DIRT small-block modified special and L.J. Lombardo got the victory.
